The shallow reef top is known for blue-ringed octopuses (Hapalochlaena spp.). Watch your computer carefully as the depths required approach recreational limits.

Hanging Gardens

Skill level: Newly Qualified AOW | Depth range: 5–40m Pastel soft corals and massive purple gorgonian fans cover this terraced wall. The area resembles a vertical greenhouse. West Ridge

Coral Gardens

Skill level: Confident AOW | Depth range: 25–40m Deep vertical cracks shelter large spiny lobsters and cryptic frogfish (Antennarius spp.). Leaf scorpionfish and pipefish occupy the fractures. You need to fin actively to explore the crevices in the moderate current. Bring a good spotlight to illuminate the macro subjects hiding in the shadows.

Your day starts early with a light breakfast before the first dive at Barracuda Point. You return to the main vessel for a larger meal while off-gassing. A second Sipadan dive follows before lunch. A Sipadan permit day gives you 3 dives from the Celebes Explorer. The crew takes you back to Sipadan for your afternoon dive. You might finish the day with a dusk dive near Kapalai to look for mandarinfish (Synchiropus splendidus).

Meals are served buffet style in the saloon. The kitchen focuses on Asian and Malaysian dishes featuring meats and carbohydrates. The menu contains no pork. You have 24-hour access to complimentary water, coffee, tea and light snacks like biscuits.

Do I need an Advanced Open Water certificate? Yes. Sabah Parks strictly enforces an Advanced Open Water or equivalent certification to dive Sipadan.

Can I dive with nitrox? Yes. Nitrox is available on board. You must monitor your depth and time limits carefully.

When should I book? You need to book many months ahead. July, August and the Chinese New Year period sell out up to a full year in advance.

Does the boat run in November? The boat does not dive Sipadan in November because the marine park is closed.

Will I share a cabin if I travel alone? You will share a twin cabin with someone of the same gender unless you pay a large single supplement.
