Your Sipadan permit days
Getting a Sipadan permit is the main reason divers book early. A Guaranteed Sipadan permit is a matter of matching the right resort with the right dive package and a minimum number of nights. Exact dates depend on the resort you choose. On a properly planned trip, your chance of diving Sipadan is very high. The team steers you to the combination that fits your schedule.
Sabah Parks issues 254 Sipadan permits a day. These allocations are weighted across the registered operators. The resorts submit their diver lists to Sabah Parks and manage the daily rosters. Rangers check passports at the jetty against these lists. Permits cannot be transferred or resold. The details that go wrong without a local contact
A trip to the islands off Semporna involves moving parts that do not always align. Tawau is the arrival airport. The road transfer to Semporna takes 70 to 90 minutes depending on traffic. You then need to catch a boat to your resort. Kapalai and Pom Pom run fixed boat times. Kapalai boats leave Semporna at 09:30 and 12:30. Pom Pom boats leave at 12:30 and 16:00. Island boats do not run after dark under the east-coast security regime. The last boats typically depart between 14:30 and 16:00.
If your flight lands late, the boat has gone. The team plans your transfers around your flights and arranges an overnight stay in Tawau or Semporna when necessary.
